A particular topic that is up for debate (which I have spoken about before) is the role of a journalist in contemporary society and how it is changing. Whilst a lot people may be hesitant to acknowledge that citizen journalism has become particularly popular, CNN is just one site that is encouraging it. I think it’s a great idea for people who are interested in reporting or who would like to contribute valuable information to the public. Whether or not others choose to believe what is reported is up to them, but I think that it’s a great way to allow people to have their say in important matters. The CNN website even offers a guide to reporting and photography that is provided by reporters themselves as well as a list of topics that need to be written about. All stories are current and are posted throughout the day and night by people from around the world. One such story described a motorcycle accident in Beirut and included photographs. Citizen journalism is the way of the future and I think it is a positive method of interaction between members of society that should be embraced.

I found this story most interesting because I was fascinated to read about how life differs in Africa compared to America as well as how corrupt it all is. Whilst I understand that this reporter was simply doing his job, I do feel that it is important to respect and be aware of the laws and regulations while working in another country. It is amazing to think that in some countries, a person can work their way out of trouble through bribery. Whilst this reporter did have to endure a long four days in jail, he obviously knew that what he was doing was wrong as he confessed to destroying his e-mails and notes as he went along and therefore should have been prepared to suffer the consequences. This story does however reinforce that being a journalist nowadays is not just a job, but can become your whole life. So many reporters are constantly looking for the best stories around the world and they are not afraid to get them. This story is just one example of the many reporters who have risked their lives for a good story and if anything, they should be commended for it.
